Welcome to the Millennium Green

As you may well know the Millennium Green has become an integral part of village life for most residents of Offord Darcy and Offord Cluny.

A place to play, exercise, walk, contemplate and enjoy. Whether it be a morning stroll with your canine best friend or seeing the joy in your the young and old faces as they zip down the slide (a pre-requisite of any overnight guest in our household) or simply a swing and a climb in the play area. The Green offers a place to enjoy and escape.

It also offers the village a heart where activities and events are attended by the hundreds. The annual dog show and the fireworks night are just two examples of how the village and villagers work together to make a success.

As Trustees of the Millennium Green we want you to enjoy it too and would love to hear or see how you enjoy the space at the heart of our village. Email and or send us your pictures and we will select the best of those submissions for next year’s annual calendar.

The Offords Music Festival 2011

OMG Festival went ahead on Saturday 18th June despite the wind and showers. A big thank you to Charlie Clay who opened the Festival for us and to all the other comperes, stewards and volunteers who contributed their valuable time and made the event run smoothly. The work involved in setting up the event was huge and although I am tempted to single out a few people I feel unable to downgrade anyone else’s efforts by not mentioning them. If a measure of success was music then the show was immense. From the first act to the last the fifteen sets on the two stages all bought something new and exciting to the Millennium Green. The variety of music was great, we had rock, blues, folk and jazz. We were delighted to have such a fantastic line up grace our stages and we would like to thank them all. The addition of a second stage to the festival gave us constant music on the green from midday through to 11pm. The Acoustic Stage was Stella Hensley’s baby. Stella set up, looked after and booked all the artists for this stage, as well as having considerable input on the main stage. The experiment worked well and a lot of the feedback I have had is from people who actually enjoyed the smaller and quieter acoustic stage more than the big bands on the main stage. We were especially delighted to have former Katrina and the Waves guitarist Kimberley Rew on the green who along with Stella Hensley, Chris Newman, Lee Cave Berry and Tony Hill gave us a fantastic rendition of his biggest hit ‘Walking on Sunshine’, it’s just a shame we didn’t have the weather to match. It was the second time we had heard that particular song as Katrina Polfrey was giving us her version as Mr Rew was walking through the gates carrying his guitar and amp, an unintentional but apt fanfare to greet the great songwriter. I would like to give a special thank you to Fat Friday who, apart from being a fantastic band, stepped in as a last minute replacement for Richie and the Runners who preferred to support Bob Dylan than be a major player on our magnificent stage. One of my personal favourites was Anton Barbeau who did a great set on the main stage with his band Three Minute Tease followed by a mind blowing set on the acoustic stage. I am now the proud owner of one of his albums and having listened to his fantastic brand of psychedelic rock on many occasions since I am in awe of his musical ability. Redsoxx provided us with an inspirational set of lively rock covers going into the evening and we finished off with the fantastic blues and skiffle of Split Whiskers. A big vote of thanks should go to our extensive list of sponsors this year who provided us with money, goods and services. Without them the festival would not happen. Finally I would like to thank everyone from Offord and the surrounding area who attended the festival. The Millennium Green is about community and it was a real community event. We hope to continue to improve the festival over the coming years and with your support that will happen. About the Fireworks display

Once again the Fireworks night was an array of whizzes bangs and flashes to a greater crowd than ever before. With estimations of around 1600 people attending a thankfully dry albeit windy night (although the forecasters did a good job of scaring us into thinking we needed to build an ark as opposed to a bonfire). A brilliant display and as mentioned a record crowd gathered to see rockets and wheels whizzing on a Saturday night. Ably helped by a gang of volunteers at the gates and on the refreshment stands that proved so popular many items sold out. ....we will certainly know for next year to make sure we have more access and hot drinks to keep everyone warm.
